Subcollections and other questions (posted by rssturner)
Posted: 12 May 05 1:25 PM

I have installed the evaluation onto my XP laptop and will be evaluating this product.  I have noticed that it doesn't seem to work when an advertisement is directed to a collection with sub-collections.  There are no sms clients in the main collection and all the clients reside in sub-collections under the "primary" collection.  Is this a future feature?

Also to get the "right click" feature on numerous admin consoles this utility will need to be installed on each administrator's PC.  Is there a licence fee for each install or is the licence fee only for the number of SMS clients that are being managed?

If and advertisements is scheduled to run every day at a specific time, will this product "wake up" the PCs prior to the adverstiment schedule every day?

What amount of network traffic does this product generate if we are waking up several thousand PCs at the same time?

Thanks!

Ross T.

Those are all very good questions.  I'll just answer these in order.

You are correct.  Currently we do not handle sub-collections.  We are planning on including that in a future version within the next month.

WakeonLanSMS is licensed based on the number of managed SMS clients so there is no additional charge for running the Administrator console.

If the advertisement is scheduled to run every day, then yes we will pick up the start time every day and wake up those machines.  We are also going to include the ability to include/exclude specific advertisements and collections in the next version.

The amount of network traffic that is generated will largely be determined by how many subnets are involved that contain PC's to wake up.  The base "wake up" process generates 6 broadcast messages to each client.  If there are several subnets involved you can expect about 200-500k traffic to one machine per subnet plus the 6 broadcoast messages to each machine that needs to be woken up.

One other quick note, our licensing model includes free upgrades for up to 1 year and after that 1 year there is a charge of $1/client per year for support maintenance and upgrades so any new features that are developed are available to you immediately.

Thanks,

Tim

WakeonLanSMS now supports advertisements that are setup to process a collection with sub-collections.
