How big is the Directed Broadcasts threat on a corporate, firewalled network?
Posted: 19 Apr 06 8:19 PM

Hi,

Just after your thoughts on the Directed Broadcasts issue.

On a large corporate network, which has tight security to the internet, and only "edge" routers have directed-broadcasts enabled, how much of a problem is there?

I believe the directed-broadcasts issue was huge in the early days of the internet (not intranets) but now that every internet-connected router has directed-broadcasts disabled (from the factory in most cases) is this really a problem?  Am I missing something?

thanks

Hey Graham,

To be honest, it really depends on who you talk to. I talk to some network guys who think it is fine to enable directed broadcasts internally as long as your perimeter is protected and plenty of others who say it is an extremely bad idea to enable them anywhere. The most serious threats historically were all of those smurf attacks from quite a few years ago but it is always possible that something could get into your network and wreak havoc so a lot of network engineers still like to disable it on every router. It seems like most security teams in companies push for locking everything down as much as possible and most network folks seem to agree. I don't personally know of anyone who has recently been affected by enabling directed broadcasts internally but I guess you never really know what new threats are going to pop up down the road. I guess it just comes down to risk tolerance and how confident you are that your network is 100% secure from anything from the outside world making its way onto your network.
