Status of SMSInstallOrder
Posted: 03 Feb 06 2:53 PM Modified By host on 2/4/2006 10:57:39 AM)
Just wanted to give everyone an update on this. We've been pretty swamped lately and haven't made as much progress as we had hoped to by this time. We've done some basic testing with the process but still have a lot of coding to do. Please let me know if you are interested in a product like this. If there is enough interest we can adjust our priorities so we can get this up and running sooner.

Another update. We've spent a moderate amount of time on this but run into a little bit of a roadblock. We just need to determine the best way to get around it. Microsoft wrote a couple things into the SMS client that are making it a bit more difficult than it should be. There are a few options we have but we have to figure out which one will work in best for most environments. The crux of the issue is that you can't get the SMS Client to easily deploy an application manually using the SYSTEM account. So, we'll have to figure out the best way to impersonate a user to kick off the package installation. Would people be opposed to using a dedicated Domain account with limited priviledges just to kick off the software installation? Just one of the ideas we have been floating around.

I would be very interested in a product to order sms apps, as would many others based on searches for a solution.

I would not like to create a domain account but would prefer to use the existing System account.  In our case, we only deploy to machines and not users.

I have been thinking of creating a vbscript to order sms jobs which would basically create advertisements in an order, since it seems that a workstation will process jobs based in the internal SMS advertisement GUID, if they are advertised at the same time.  SMS assigns this GUID when the advertisement is created so a vbscript, using WMI, to create a bunch of advertisements should be processed on the workstation based on the GUID.  The vbscript would create the advertisements based on a known, ordered list.  I would rather not do this as the ongoing mainenance of such a method is problematic (all advertisements woukld need to be recreated if one package in the "set" is changed)

Keep at it guys....
